1.  FOR A MARTYR OR MARTYRS

The Collect

GRANT, O Lord, that, as we commemorate thy servant(s) N., who loved not his life unto death, but was gladly offered upon the sacrifice and service of our faith, so we may overcome the prince of this world by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony; and finally obtain the crown of righteousness which is laid up for all who love the appearing of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

The Epistle.  St Timothy 4. 5

WATCH thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.  For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:  henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day:  and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

The Gospel.  St John 16. 1

JESUS said to his disciples, These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.  They shall put you out of the synagogues:  yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.  And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.  But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them.  And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.  But now I go my way to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?  But, because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.  Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away:  for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.  And when he is come, he will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgement:  of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgement, because the prince of this world is judged.

2.  FOR A MISSIONARY

The Collect

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, we thank thee for thy servant N., whom thou didst call to preach the gospel to the nations; and humbly pray thee to raise up among us those who shall be heralds and evangelists of thy Kingdom, and shall build up thy Church in this and every land; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Epistle. Romans 15. 15

BRETHREN, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God, that I should be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.  I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God.  For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.  Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man’s foundation:  but as it is written,

To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see;

And they that have not heard shall understand.

The Gospel.  St Luke 10. 17

THE seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.  Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy:  and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.  In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes:  even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.  All things are delivered to me of my Father:  and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.  And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:  for I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Or,

The Epistle.  1 Thessalonians 2. 1

BRETHREN, ye know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:  but even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God in much conflict.  For our exhortation was not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:  but as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which proveth our hearts.  For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:  nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.  But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:  so being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.  For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail:  working night and day that we might not burden any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.  Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:  as ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, that ye should walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

The Gospel.  St Mark 10. 28

PETER began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.  And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sister, or mother, or father, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.  But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

3.  FOR A CONVERT

The Collect

WE bless thy name, O heavenly Father, for that thou didst of thy mercy vouchsafe to call thy servant N. to faith in Christ and to be a valiant witness before the people of his land; and we pray that mindful of his life, and inspired by his example, we may be strengthened to follow in his footsteps; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Epistle.  Philippians 3. 7

WHAT things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord:  for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having a righteousness of mine own, even that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:  that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.  Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect:  but I press on, if so be that I may apprehend that for which also I was apprehended by Christ Jesus.  Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended:  but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

The Gospel.  St Matthew 13. 44

JESUS said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:  who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

4.  FOR OTHERS

The Collect

ACCEPT, O Lord, our thanksgiving this day for thy servant N., and grant unto us the like unswerving constancy and zeal in thy service; that so we may witness a good confession and obtain the crown of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Epistle.  1 St John 2. 14

I HAVE written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning.  I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.  If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof:  but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.

The Gospel.  St Matthew 5. 13

JESUS said to his disciples, Ye are the salt of the earth:  but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is henceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.  Ye are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.  Even so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
