1.  OF A MARTYR OR MARTYRS

The Collect

ALMIGHTY God, by whose grace and power thy holy martyr(s) N. (or N.N.) triumphed over suffering, and despised death:  Grant, we beseech thee, that enduring hardness, and waxing valiant in fight, we may with the noble army of martyrs receive the crown of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Or,

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who didst strengthen thy blessed martyr Saint N. with the virtue of constancy in faith and truth:  Grant that we also may be prepared gladly to suffer reproach and persecution, and even death, for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end.   Amen.

Or,

The Lesson.  Wisdom 3. 1

THE souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,

And there shall no torment touch them.

In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die:

And their departure is taken for misery,

And their going from us to be utter destruction:

But they are at peace.

For though they be punished in the sight of men,

Yet is their hope full of immortality.

And having been a little chastised, they shall be greatly rewarded:

For God proved them, and found them worthy for himself.

As gold in the furnace hath he tried them,

And received them as a burnt offering.

And in the time of their visitation they shall shine,

And run to and fro like sparks among the stubble,

They shall judge the nations, and have dominion over the people,

And their Lord shall reign for ever.

The Epistle.  Hebrews 11. 32, and part of Chapter 12

AND what shall I more say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthah; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:  who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.  Women received their dead raised to life again:  and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:  and others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:  they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword:  they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (of whom the world was not worthy:)  they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.  And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:  God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Or,

The Epistle.  1 St Peter 4. 13

REJOICE, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.  If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you:  on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.  But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s mattes.  Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.  For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God:  and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?  And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?  Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

The Gospel.  St. Matthew 10. 26

JESUS said to his disciples, Fear them not therefore:  for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.  What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light:  and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul:  but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.  Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall to the ground without your Father.  But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.  Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

Or,

The Gospel.  St. Matthew 16. 24

JESUS said to his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  For whosoever will save his lie shall lose it:  and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?  For the Son of Man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

2.  OF A CONFESSOR

The Collect

O GOD, whose blessed Son witnessed a good confession when he came to give eternal life to the sons of men:  Grant that we, who celebrate with gladness the festival of blessed N. thy Confessor, may likewise profess our faith before many witnesses, and with him enter into the joy of our Lord, even the same thy Son, Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end.  Amen.

The Lesson.  Wisdom 4. 7

THOUGH the righteous be prevented with death, yet shall he be in rest,

For an honourable age is not that which standeth in length of time,

Nor that is measured by number of years.

But wisdom is the grey hair unto men,

And an unspotted life is old age.

He pleased God, and was beloved of him:

So that living among sinners he was translated.

The Epistle.  1 St Timothy 6. 11

THOU, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.  Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast confessed the good confession before many witnesses.  I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed the good confession; but thou keep this commandment without spot, without reproach, until the appearing of Our Lord Jesus Christ:  which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see:  to whom be honour and power everlasting.  Amen.

The Gospel.  St Luke 12. 2

JESUS said, There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.  Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.  And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.  But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear:  Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.  Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?  But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not therefore:  ye are of more value than many sparrows.  Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God.

3.  OF A DOCTOR

The Collect

O GOD, who hast enlightened thy Church by the teaching of thy servant N.:  Enrich it evermore, we beseech thee, with thy heavenly grace, and raise up faithful witnesses, who by their life and doctrine may set forth to all men the truth of thy salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Lesson.  Wisdom 7. 7

I PRAYED, and understanding was given me:  I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.

I preferred her before scepters and thrones,

And esteemed riches nothing in comparison of her.

Neither compared I unto her any precious stone,

Because all gold in respect of her is as a little sand,

And silver shall be counted as clay before her.

I loved her above health and beauty,

And chose to have her instead of light:

For the light that cometh from her never goeth out.

All good things together came to me with her,

And innumerable riches in her hands.

And I rejoiced in them all, because wisdom goeth before them:

And I knew not that she was the mother of them.

I learned diligently, and do communicate her liberally:

I do not hide her riches.

For she is a treasure unto men that never faileth:

Which they that use become the friends of God,

Being commended for the gifts that come from learning.

The Epistle.  1 Corinthians 2. 11

WHO among men knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of the man, which is in him? even so the things of God none knoweth, but the Spirit of God.  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God.  Which things also we speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Spirit teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God:  for they are foolishness unto him:  neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.  But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.  For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him?  But we have the mind of Christ.

The Gospel.  St. Matthew 13. 51

JESUS said unto them, Have ye understood all these things?  They say unto him, Yea, Lord.  Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

4.  OF A BISHOP

The Collect

O GOD, the light of the faithful, and shepherd of souls, who didst set blessed N. to be a bishop in the Church, that he might feed thy sheep by his word and guide them by his example:  Grant us, we pray thee, to keep the faith which he taught, and to follow in his footsteps; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Lesson.  Ezekiel 34. 11

THUS saith the Lord God:  Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.  As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.  And I will bring them out from the peoples, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.  I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be:  there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.  I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God.

The Epistle.  2 St Timothy 4. 1

I CHARGE thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom:  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.  But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.  For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:  henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Or,

The Epistle.  1 St Peter 5. 1

THE elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:  Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.  And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

The Gospel.  St John 17. 6

I HAVE manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world:  thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.  Now they know that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are from thee.  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.  I pray for them:  I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.  And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

Or,

The Gospel.  St. John 21. 15

WHEN they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?  He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee.  He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.  He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?  He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee.  He saith unto him, Tend my sheep.  He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?  Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me?  And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee.  Jesus said unto him, Feed my sheep.

5.  OF A RELIGIOUS

The Collect

O GOD, whose blessed Son became poor that we through his poverty might be rich:  Deliver us, we beseech thee, from the love of this world, that following the example of thy servant N., we may serve thee with singleness of heart, and may attain unto the riches of the world to come; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Lesson.  Jeremiah 17. 7

BLESSED is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.  For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.  The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:  who can know it?  I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

The Epistle.  Philippians 3. 7

WHAT things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord:  for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having a righteousness of mine own, even that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:  that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.  Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect:  but I press on, if so be that I may apprehend that for which also I was apprehended of Christ Jesus.

The Gospel.  St Matthew 19. 23

<>JESUS said unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.  And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.  When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed saying, Who then can be saved?  But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible:  but with God all things are possible.  Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?  And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.  And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

<>6.  OF A MISSIONARY

The Collect

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, we thank thee for thy servant Saint N., whom thou didst call to preach the Gospel to the people of . . . .; and we humbly pray thee to raise up in this and every land those who shall be heralds and evangelists of thy kingdom, that so thy Church may make known the unsearchable riches of Christ, and may increase with the increase of God; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Lesson.  Isaiah 61. 1

THE Spirit of the Lord is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

The Epistle.  2 Corinthians 4. 5

WE preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.  For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.  We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

The Gospel.  St Matthew 28. 16

<>THE eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.  And when they saw him, they worshipped him:  but some doubted.  And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.  Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit:  teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:  and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.

7.  OF A VIRGIN MARTYR OR A VIRGIN

The Collect

O GOD, who didst endue thy holy Virgin N. with grace to witness a good confession (and to suffer gladly for thy sake):  Grant that we, after her example, may be found ready when the Bridegroom cometh, and enter with him into the marriage feast; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Lesson.  Ecclesiasticus 51. 6

MY soul drew near even unto death,

My life was near to the hell beneath,

They compassed me on every side,

And there was no man to help me:

I looked for the succour of men,

But there was none.

Then thought I upon thy mercy, O Lord,

And upon thy acts of old,

How thou deliverest such as wait for thee,

And savest them out of the hands of the enemies.

Then lifted I up my supplication from the earth,

And prayed for deliverance from death.

I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord,

That he would not leave me in the days of my trouble,

And in the time of the proud, when there was no help.

I will praise thy name continually,

And will sing praise with thanksgiving;

And so my prayer was heard:

For thou savedst me from destruction,

And deliveredst me from the evil time:

Therefore will I give thanks, and praise thee,

And bless thy name, O Lord.

The Lesson.  Revelation 7. 13

ONE of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?  And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest.  And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.  Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple:  and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.  They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.  For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters:  and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Or,

The Epistle.  Philippians 4. 1

THEREFORE, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.  I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.  And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow labourers, whose names are in the book of life.  Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice.  Let your moderation be known unto all men.  The Lord is at hand.  In nothing be anxious:  but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The Gospel.  St Matthew 25. 1

JESUS said, The kingdom of heaven shall be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.  And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.  They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:  but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.  While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.  And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.  Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.  And the foolish said unto the wise, Give me of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.  But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you:  but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.  And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage:  and the door was shut.  Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.  But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.  Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of Man cometh.

Or,

The Gospel.  St Matthew 13. 44

JESUS said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:  who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

8.  OF A MATRON

The Collect

HEAR us, O God of our salvation, that, as we rejoice in the festival of thy blessed Saint N., so of thy mercy we may be taught the spirit of devotion; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen. .

The Lesson.  Proverbs 31. 10

WHO can find a virtuous woman?

For her price is far above rubies.

The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her,

So that he shall have no need of spoil.

She will do him good and not evil

All the days of her life.

Strength and honour are her clothing;

And she shall rejoice in time to come.

She openeth her mouth with wisdom;

And in her tongue is the law of kindness.

She looketh well to the ways of her household,

And eateth not the bread of idleness.

Her children rise up, and call her blessed;

Her husband also, and he praiseth her, saying,

Many daughters have done virtuously,

But thou excellest them all.

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain:

But a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

Give her the fruit of her hands;

And let her own works praise her in the gates.

The Epistle.  1 St Peter 3. 1

LIKEWISE, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be won by the behaviour of the wives; beholding your chaste behaviour coupled with fear.  Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.  For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:  Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord:  whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

The Gospel.  St Luke 8. 1

IT came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and showing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God:  and the twelve were with him, and certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered to him of their substance.

9.  OF ANY SAINT

The Collect

O ALMIGHTY God, who willest to be glorified in thy Saints, and didst raise up thy servant N. to shine as a light in the world:  Shine, we pray thee, in our hearts, that we also in our generation may show forth thy praises, who hast called us out of darkness into thy marvellous light; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Lesson.  Ecclesiasticus 2. 1

MY son, if thou come to serve the Lord,

Prepare thy soul for temptation.

Set thy heart aright, and constantly endure,

And make not haste in time of trouble.

Cleave unto him, and depart not away,

That thou mayest be increased at thy last end.

Whatsoever is brought upon thee take cheerfully,

And be patient when thou art changed to a low estate.

For gold is tried in the fire,

And acceptable men in the furnace of adversity.

Believe in him, and he will help thee;

Order thy way aright, and trust in him.

Ye that fear the Lord, wait for his mercy;

And go not aside, lest ye fall.

Ye that fear the Lord, believe him;

And your reward shall not fail.

Ye that fear the Lord, hope for good,

And for everlasting joy and mercy.

The Lesson.  Revelation 19. 6

I HEARD as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia:  for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.  And let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him:  for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.  And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white:  for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.  And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.  And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

The Gospel.  St Luke 6. 20

JESUS lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor:  for yours is the kingdom of God.  Blessed are ye that hunger now:  for ye shall be filled.  Blessed are ye that weep now:  for ye shall laugh.  Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.  Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy:  for behold, your reward is great in heaven:  for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
